Sketching on Site (From Observation)

In a recent workshop Alaiyo held for Parsons students on sketching the figure in space she brought in her own sketchbooks as part of shown examples. Important for students to see what you do as an artist when asking them to follow suit.
In these sketchbooks she focuses her subject matter on recording various scenes from her travels, models for her illustrations and general observational drawing in lieu of a camera. She feels that immersing yourself in a drawing is a far better way of recording a setting. To sketch is to perceive. The following are pages from past sketchbooks using pen and ink, sepia ink in line and wash, conté and white chalk on toned paper.
The outside sketchbook covers all have Alaiyo’s handmade elements.
